ICT is present in every stage of the publishing value chain; it was adopted very early in production and, in recent years, it has reached the end user by providing a fully satisfactory reading experience as well as a number of enhanced features.
Publishers are at the forefront of innovation as they constantly seek innovative ways to provide the tools that their core audience needs to make better decisions and sometimes make groundbreaking discoveries in science, health, and technology. The transition to digital has thus brought about a number of opportunities for the publishing sector, to innovate production processes, products and business models, as well as a series of challenges.
In the spirit of finding technological solutions to many of these challenges, the TISP project (Technology and Innovation for Smart Publishing) was launched in 2012, with the aim of fostering business innovation in the book publishing and ICT sectors via enhanced dialogue, mutual understanding, information exchanges, and of supporting policy innovation at national and European level through a series of recommendations stemming from the dialogue between the main stakeholder communities. This is achieved through a platform for publishers and technology providers to fill the gaps between them and to bring new ideas into both sectors, focusing on technological solutions and suggestions to create an environment conducive to further the integration of ICT and publishing. TISP is a project co-funded by the European Union under the ICT Policy Support Programme, running until December 2015.
The breakfast debate will include a presentation of the project by the Italian Publisher Association (AIE), Project Coordinator, focusing on the needs of the publishing sector in terms of access to research and on the project recommendations, and two examples of innovative initiatives that illustrate the spirit of the project, from the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Boersenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels), which is launching a series of projects to stimulate innovation (including a start-up incubator) and from the RELX Group, which is implementing innovative ICT solutions to meet the needs of researchers.
